MaLDoHD actual situation

UPDATE 1: After the moment of anger, I have to admit that, although the list of unlocked variables remains small, they have made some interesting additions. For exemple, e_Tesselation now works directly without messing with objectdetail and changing all affected cvars minus tess. They have fixed the flickering decals over wind-blown fabrics in first level too (now the material has no decals). Another good thing is that they have fixed the multiplayer broken performance in less than three days. So although it is still not the global desired situation, they are taking steps in the right direction.  Hopefully they can release mod tools promptly.

Thank you for your comments. Jesse, I forgot about that bug (glitch when you're aiming and the weapon dissapears and you can see a small hand or scope), you can fix it deleting the file "Crysis 2\Mods\MaLDoHDv4\gamecrysis2\Scripts\Entities\actor\basicactor.lua". The modification in this file allow mod to change r_DrawNearFov automatically after respawn and others situations where Crysis 2 reset the value to 55. But then this bug can appear in some situations.


Hi all, I want to share my actual situation about MaLDoHD.

First of all, the only problem that a few users were experiencing in MaLDoHD 4.0 for Crysis 2 with invisible walls and ceilings on the Roosevelt Island level, can be easily fixed. Although I put it in the comments of the other thread, it seems logical to add it here in case anyone still has that problem. As I said at the time, it's not a fault of the modded material used in these walls, but a conflict that is generated in the user profile under certain circumstances and causes the engine not draw some surfaces. How to fix:

- Delete autoexec.cfg into crysis 2 game folder
- Start game without mods
- Change global graphic preset to Ultra
- Close game
- Restart game without mods (profile config will be updated)
- Close game again
- Launch MaLDoHD configurator and select recommended settings and nothing more
- Launch MaLDoHD v4 mod

There is another problem with the AI of an enemy group at the end of FDR level. They are running against the walls instead of search for the player. I give up with that, sorry.

About OnTheFly Tool for Crysis 3, I want to talk a bit more.

The reason of this tool is that I hate the situation of locked console vars into single player campaign. Crytek games was always on my top ten because I enjoy a lot playing with cvars. Crytek games used to be "sandbox" gameplay (very open for a FPS), "sandbox" console vars configuration (you can modify all you want in game mode in realtime) and "sandbox" editor (SANDBOX is the name they use for the Farcry editor). All three sandbox experiences packed into a game (editor included into the game seems a crytek trademark). You can play the game, alter the experience through the console, or create a full new experience using the sandbox editor. Three pillars of a complete experience.

With Crysis 2 they reduced the amound of cvars and ripped the editor in the initial launch. They also restricted the gameplay. Crysis 3, including a large batch of pre-launch promises, does not solve the problem.

We lose the editor, we lose the console configuration, we lose big part of the gameplay. Finally, the triple sandbox experience becomes an ordinary shooter. A great shooter, but a different thing compared with original Crysis.

In OnTheFly, I modified Crysis 3 executable to enable "exec" command. This way, you can execute .cfg files with every locked or unlocked cvar and modify their value. You can bind those .cfg files or cvar changes to keys. But the big thing is the possibility of changing locked cvars.

After first and second Crysis 3 official patches, I modified the exe again to enable "exec" command and release a new OnTheFly version.

Crysis 3 1.3 patch changes everything. Crytek have enabled "exec" command in Crysis 3 now. Is this a good thing? In my opinion, no. Why? Because they have modified the way "exec" works. The new "exec" command only allow to modify unlocked cvars. So, now, using "exec" is the same that using ingame console. This modification is not listed in 1.3 patch changelog, but is important imo. The only way until now you can modify locked cvars (OnTheFly Tool) is destroyed.

Now, we can't enable tesselation indepently of global object quality, we can't change shadow shader quality indepently of global shadow quality and so on. The full list of hundreds of cvars becomes, again, a lite list with a few unlocked cvars.

Maybe this isn't a big problem for mayority of players, but in my opinion, is a bad movement at all, because at the moment, the developer is openly showing that not only is not capable of maintaining the three pillars of freedom that were specific to their brand, but intends to clip the wings of anyone who wants to get.

Surely they can say that is only way to fight the cheats in multiplayer, but there are different ways (more logical and more efficient) to get a clean multiplayer than limiting this way the possibilities for players who don't cheat or who don't play multiplayer at all.

At the moment, I give up about OnTheFly Tool too. I'm having a good time with a lot of games from my pending list. Many of them are not as ambitious in some aspects, but in general seem more honest with the player. If someday Crytek allows Crysis 3 mods, maybe I will do something.

  3. I'm sad to hear that you won;t be able to continue your work with Crysis 3, but I'm also extremely grateful for all of your previous work with the Crysis series. MaldoHD 4.0 is literally my favorite mod of all time, and I would absolutely love to see something similar for Crysis 3 someday. Here's to hoping that it'll be possible in the future! And for the meantime, thanks for all your excellent work!

  4. Great post, glad I could help with testing the Roosevelt Island glitch. The only issue I have left with 4.0 Final is the low-health/low-ammo scope glitch (gun, scope, and arm move about a meter in front of the player's eyes, but stays in the zoomed position). I'm fairly sure it's tied to when those indicators flash on the screen. Happens with all guns while using the reflex/assault/sniper scope. This was not an issue with 4.0 Beta, so I'm wondering if you tried to delete or reduce the low-health and ammo indicators and accidentally created this glitch. I also do not know if it is a Radeon-only problem like rendering water and broken glass. I am hopefully getting a GTX 660 this summer :)

    And as always, you are amazing - thank you so much for your incredible work! Here's hoping Crytek unlocks the cvars and releases the editor soon!

  5. Hello Maldo,
    i want to thank you for the terrific job youve done with Crysis 2. Especially Level Hive in my opinion is better than any map in Crysis 3. All that crazy tessellation you did there is missing in Crysis 3. I cannot see why Crysis 3 is so much better than 2. I think Crysis 3 has way to little missions.
    On the whole Crysis 2 with MaldoHd4 is much more fun to play.
    Crysis 3 is a depressing dark world whereas Crysis 2 has something more friendly human due to the city.

  6. It's obvious they Gimped Crysis for consoles once more in terms of gameplay design and couldn't still decide whether they wanted to be story focused or gameplay focused.

    Shame it just makes Crysis nothing but wasted Potential in every possible area.

    And also: LOL Seems like they are repeating the same mistakes as Crysis 2 in MP in C3's MP. They just don't learn do they.

    OH well not like I care. It was clear from the Alpha they were completely misguided and were trying to remove everything that made C2's MP amazing and actually take a LOT of skill before they completely broke it in patch 1.8/9.(Though there were a million issues prior to that patch anyway). They are trying to cater to the instant gratification crowd of CoD ("Wah Learning curve!? I want to do good now! I don't care if I just started playing or if i'm a a noob!")and I was going to have no part of that.

    Energy management was what separated the Good and the bad in C2.

    There wont be any game in the next 2 years that will look as good as Crysis 3. Ha, ive seen several game previews, that look even better than Crysis 3. they only were interested
    in selling it. All those hypocritical statements towards PC gamer i remember, phhh.

  9. Hi Maldo,with all your knowledge about the graphic aspect of the cryengine and based on what youve seen from crysis 3 development and the released build...
    Could you comment about tessellation and geometry in general in this game.
    Because the footage that ive seen before the release was much more impressive in regard to geometry.

    1. I'd like to hear some more-specific comments from Maldo, too. I noticed the rails and pipes could use some rounding-off with tess, and it looks like the trees got overlooked when it came time to tessellate them...

    3. Hi, Crysis 3 is amazing but they droped character tessellation, object tessellation is only applied in vegetation, and parallax mapping is only applied in a few terrain materials (with incorrect parallax bias), no parallax in walls. There are a few visual glitches too.

  11. Hello! Great work on everything! One question tho... After I install MaldoHD 4.0 I can't launch the game normally (without the mod), I can only launch it using the mod's configuration utility and then have to unload the mod from the game and wait for it to restart. This is only a problem for me when I want to fix the invisible walls in Roosevelt Island level. I have to launch the game with no mods to create the new "autoexec.cfg" but I can't, please help :)

    is recommended setting the only way to fix that invisible wall?

    also, i tried adding" -mod MaLDoHDv4" in the original crysis2 shortcut, the walls is visible, is there any different between using the MaLDoHDv4 shortcut and the original crysis2 shortcut with " -mod MaLDoHDv4"?


  14. Well, glad then that I downloaded Crysis 3 instead of buying it since they're being morons by blocking modders so I cannot enjoy MaldoHD on Crysis 3 like I used to on Crysis 2. It made the game wayyy better!

    --> Can you please re-up Fix 1 and Fix 2? Nearly any host will do for these smaller files (though I like Uploaded).

  16. Luckly I have downloaded the torrent Crysis 3 from R.G.Catalyst.
    That release is version 1.2 of Crysis 3 and has the Maldo onthefly INCLUDED :D
    So in the past you have released something for Crysis 3 otherwise R.G.Catalyst could NOT have your onthefly included.

    But hey, I`m very very happy with it so many thanks :)

  18. I'm confused. there 9 different folders - do I unrar the first part and run it, or do I unrar all of the folders and run the setup off all of them separately?
